ABU DHABI ENTRY GUIDE · CHECK YOUR ROUTE BEFORE TRAVEL

Abu Dhabi entry requirements for Saudi citizens and residents

Saudi citizens do not need a visa to enter the UAE. Saudi residents travelling on another passport are assessed by that passport’s nationality—not by Saudi residence alone. This guide helps you check the right route for a citizen, resident or companion before you travel.

General travel information only; it is not an immigration decision or a guarantee of entry. Current UAE authority and carrier instructions take precedence.

The short answer

Three traveller profiles, three different routes

The UAE Government visa checker says GCC citizens do not need a visa. A Saudi citizen should therefore begin by checking the original travel document, its validity and whether the name matches the booking—not by applying for a visa.

A Saudi resident travelling on a non-Saudi passport is a separate case. Depending on the passport nationality, a traveller may enter visa-free, qualify for visa on arrival, or need advance approval. Saudi residence by itself is not a UAE visa exemption. If no other route applies, the GCC-resident eVisa may be available if its passport, residence-validity and profession conditions are met—and it must be obtained before arrival.

A foreign companion of a GCC citizen has a distinct ICP service and requirements. Check each traveller’s passport and status separately; do not assume a spouse, child or household worker inherits the citizen’s entry status.

What changes for a citizen, resident or companion?

GCC CITIZEN

Saudi citizen

No visa is required for a GCC citizen to enter the UAE. Travel with an original passport or original national ID accepted for GCC travel. The UAE lists six months’ validity for a passport; Saudi Passports says an ID used for GCC travel must have at least three months remaining.

Saudi Passports: national ID guidance ↗
GCC RESIDENT

Resident who is not a GCC citizen

Start with the passport nationality, not the Saudi residence permit or job title. If visa-free entry or visa on arrival does not apply, check the GCC-resident eVisa. Published conditions include a passport valid for at least six months, GCC residence valid for at least one year from arrival and an eligible profession assessed by the authority.

GCC COMPANION

Foreign companion

ICP lists a separate service for companions of GCC citizens. Its conditions include a passport valid for six months, a GCC residence permit valid for at least one year and the host citizen’s presence on arrival. Confirm that the traveller fits the official definition of companion.

Document checkpoints

Prepare documents for the route you will actually use

This practical list does not replace the live application requirements or instructions from your carrier and border crossing.

  1. 01 / IDENTITY

    Original document for every traveller

Match each traveller’s name, date of birth and document number to the booking. A Saudi citizen should not rely on a digital ID, family register or phone screenshot for international travel. Each child needs an original travel document; a resident’s visa eligibility is checked against their own passport.

  2. 02 / VALIDITY

Check the rule for the document and route

The UAE Government lists at least six months’ passport validity from entry. Saudi Passports says a national ID used for GCC travel must have at least three months remaining. These are different documents and rules. Check that a renewed passport is active and all details match the booking.

  3. 03 / ELIGIBILITY

    Check nationality before residence status

For a non-Saudi resident, select the passport nationality and document type in the official UAE checker. If the traveller qualifies for visa on arrival, follow that route’s conditions; otherwise check an advance visa. Confirm that a GCC-resident eVisa is appropriate before applying.

  4. 04 / PERMIT

Get any required approval before arrival

The UAE’s published GCC-resident route requires an online application and approval before travel. Its entry permit is valid for 30 days from issue; the permitted stay is 30 days from arrival and may be extended once for a further 30 days. Recheck current dates and conditions in the live government service.

  5. 05 / SUPPORT

Upload supporting files only in the official service

ICP may request a passport, photo and GCC residence evidence; the applicable route can also require health insurance, an onward ticket, fees or guarantees. Submit sensitive documents through the official ICP channel—not a general trip-planning enquiry.

  6. 06 / FINAL CHECK

Confirm with the carrier and entry point

Carriers can check documents before boarding, and the competent authority decides admission at the port. Keep offline copies of any permit, insurance and booking while carrying the required originals. If the passport or residence details change after approval, ask the authority what to do before departure.

Validity is not one number

Keep four different dates separate

Document validity, the entry permit’s use-by window and the permitted stay serve different purposes. Put them on one timeline before buying a restricted ticket.

6 months
UAE-listed passport validity from entry for the applicable route.
3 months
Saudi national-ID validity for GCC travel, per Saudi Passports.
1 year
GCC residence validity required for the published GCC-resident eVisa route.
30 + 30 days
Published GCC-resident stay, with one possible 30-day extension; check the permit’s own validity separately.

Families and children

No single family approval covers every passport

Handle each person as an individual traveller. A parent’s visa or GCC status does not automatically establish a child’s eligibility.

  • Carry an original, valid document for every child.
  • Check each non-GCC passport’s nationality and visa route separately.
  • Confirm any carrier or transit-country consent documents if a child travels with one parent or another companion.
  • Do not treat a family register or a parent’s permit as the child’s travel document.

By road from Saudi Arabia

A visa check is only one part of a road crossing

The UAE Government confirms that visitors can drive into the UAE from Saudi Arabia. Before setting out, check each traveller’s UAE entry route, Saudi exit requirements, the driver’s licence and any international permit required for the driver’s status, vehicle authorisation, valid UAE-accepted vehicle insurance, border opening information and the planned route.

Do not assume a digital copy or Saudi motor policy is accepted at the border. Confirm with the insurer, carrier and official authorities, and keep required documents available offline.

Frequently asked questions

Entering Abu Dhabi from Saudi Arabia

Rules depend on passport, status and arrival method. Recheck the official source and carrier requirements before departure.

Do Saudi citizens need a visa to enter Abu Dhabi?

No. The UAE Government states that GCC citizens do not need a visa to enter the UAE. Carry an accepted original travel document and check its validity and carrier requirements before departure.

Can a Saudi citizen travel to Abu Dhabi with a national ID?

Saudi Passports permits travel to GCC countries with an original national ID that has at least three months of validity. A digital ID in Absher or Tawakkalna and a family register are not international travel documents.

Does Saudi residence exempt a non-Saudi resident from a UAE visa?

No automatic exemption follows from Saudi residence. Start with the passport nationality: the traveller may qualify for visa-free entry or visa on arrival, need advance approval, or meet the GCC-resident eVisa conditions.

Can a Saudi resident get a UAE visa on arrival?

Not because of Saudi residence alone. Visa-on-arrival eligibility depends on passport nationality. A traveller using the UAE GCC-resident eVisa route must apply online and obtain approval before arrival.

How long must my passport and GCC residence remain valid?

The UAE Government lists at least six months of passport validity from arrival and at least one year remaining on the GCC residence permit for the published GCC-resident eVisa route. The profession must also meet the authority’s assessment.

Does a child need a separate travel document or visa?

Treat every child as an individual traveller with an original valid document. A family register or parent’s visa is not the child’s travel document; the child’s route depends on their own passport nationality and status.

Are entry requirements different when driving from Saudi Arabia?

The visa route still depends on each traveller. A road journey adds checks for Saudi exit requirements, driver and vehicle documents, authorisation and insurance. Confirm current rules with the relevant authorities, insurer and border point.

Is there a separate visa for Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi is part of the UAE, so entry eligibility is checked under UAE rules. For Abu Dhabi entry permits, ICP is the main federal authority; application channels can differ for permits issued by Dubai.
