Choosing your trip from Saudi Arabia
There is no single winner. Bali offers a focused island experience combining nature, culture and villas; Thailand lets you combine a city, coast and islands with a wider choice of services. Start with the trip you want, not a popular photograph or a standalone price.
Choose Bali for an island pace, a villa, cultural experiences and wellness, with time allowed for road transfers. Choose Thailand for more variety between city and beach and broader family options. If your priorities are close, use the season, actual flights and package terms to decide.
Compare what matters
| Criterion | Bali | Thailand | Deciding question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Destination structure | One island, but its areas are spread out. Ubud is often combined with one or more coastal bases. | A country with multiple bases: Bangkok can be combined with Phuket, Krabi, Samui or the north. | A focused island story or a city-and-beach mix? |
| Pace and activities | Culture, nature, wellness, cafés and villas. Road travel affects the shape of your day. | Services, cities, shopping, beaches and tours. More variety can also mean a domestic flight. | Which activity would you regret missing? |
| Length | 7–9 nights usually allow two comfortable bases. | 8–11 nights often suit a city and coast without excessive rushing. | How many transfers will you accept? |
| Budget | Villas and private transport may look appealing, but flights, inter-area transfers and fees belong in the total. | A broad range of hotels and food, with domestic flights, islands and baggage adding costs. | Are both complete trips being compared on equal terms? |
| Families | A low-transfer base, private pool and driver can work well. Traffic and roads matter with children. | Usually broader resort and service options, provided the neighbourhood and coast suit the family. | Children’s ages and travel time matter more than the country name. |
| Honeymoons | Strong for villas, privacy, wellness and culture. | Strong for resort and island variety, with Bangkok shopping as an option. | Is privacy or variety the priority? |
This compares trip structure, not overall quality. The hotel, area, season and flight can change the outcome within either destination.
Explore your priorities
Choose the options closest to your preferences. The result explains the leaning; it does not replace a dated quote, entry checks or a weather forecast.
Compare in Saudi riyals
Neither destination is always cheaper. Departure city, date, baggage, room category and occupancy change the price. Bali may offer attractive villa or driver value, but getting there, road transfers and tourist-entry costs add items. Thailand offers a broad hotel and food range, but adding an island to Bangkok brings a domestic flight or transfer; boat excursions may be separate.
Use the same number of nights, similar hotel standards, breakfast, baggage, airport transfers and broadly equivalent excursions.
Use an exchange rate from the same day and allow for currency changes and card charges. Do not compare a cash-only price with a fee-inclusive total.
Put flights, accommodation, transport and entry requirements first, then food, tours, shopping and a contingency.
For detailed examples, see Bali trip costs and Thailand trip costs. Compare the final totals for your own travel dates.
Timing changes the better fit
Bali’s broad dry-season window is usually April–October, with November–March generally wetter. The area, day and sea conditions still vary. In Thailand, a national hot, rainy or cooler-season label is not enough: the Andaman and Gulf coasts do not share identical rain and sea patterns.
Thailand may suit a particular month if you choose the right coast; Bali can work outside peak periods if your itinerary is flexible. Read the best time to visit Bali and best time to visit Thailand, then check short-range forecasts and sea warnings before the activity.
Before a non-refundable booking
The Indonesian B1 visa-on-arrival route has an initial stay of up to 30 days. Saudi passports appear on the published eligible-nationality list; confirm the current list, passport conditions and route before payment. Bali also has a foreign-tourist levy through Love Bali. Rules, fees and documents can change: consult Bali entry requirements for Saudis and the official sources before travel.
Thailand announced changes to its exemption arrangements in 2026, with implementation tied to official publication. Do not rely on an old exemption duration. Non-Thai travellers generally complete the TDAC within the three-day window before arrival; it is not a visa. Check the official rules, exceptions and your airline, alongside Thailand entry requirements for Saudis.
Practical scenarios
If a villa, privacy, wellness and culture matter more than shopping and multiple cities. Two bases usually serve you better than chasing many areas.
If resort and service choice, food and varied activities matter most. Choose a quieter neighbourhood and keep transfers limited.
Thailand gives more obvious variety; Bali gives a focused island story. Flights, season and comfort with road travel decide the fit.
Two Bali bases or one Thai coast can be better than an overloaded itinerary. More destination names do not automatically mean more value.
Bangkok combined with a coast fits this goal, allowing for domestic-flight time and baggage.
Ubud and a selected coast create a useful balance. Check drive times and villa location, not just the area’s name.
Beyond the marketing photographs
Bali’s map distances can look small, but traffic, local roads and villa location can make transfers a major part of the day. Group activities by area rather than going from the south to Ubud and back without a reason. In Thailand, a city-to-coast or northern transfer is more obvious because it often involves a flight. Door-to-door time still includes leaving the hotel, airports, queues, baggage and the next transfer. On a short trip, two Bali bases are a common practical limit; in Thailand, a city and one coast are often more comfortable than three islands.
Bali offers varied villas and smaller resorts, but a private villa may be far from restaurants or need a driver. Reception, housekeeping and security can differ from a full-service hotel. Ask about actual pool privacy, bathrooms, air conditioning, breakfast, car access and children’s policies. Thailand offers city hotels through to island resorts, but a beach name does not guarantee easy swimming or peace. Check the building’s location, room-to-facility distances, tides, roads and slopes. Compare the specific room category, not only the star rating.
Both have varied food in tourist areas, but “suitable food” needs a clear definition. For verified halal food or particular ingredient restrictions, ask directly about ingredients and preparation; a dish’s appearance or an old review is not enough. Bangkok, Phuket and Bali’s main areas offer more choice than remote locations. A kitchenette or flexible breakfast may matter more to a family than a fine-dining restaurant. Couples can book private experiences after checking weather and cancellation terms, rather than relying on a romantic photograph.
Boat excursions depend on sea conditions, wind, authority instructions and the operator. Thai islands differ in departure points, boat times and group size; a Bali activity can involve an early port transfer and waiting. Do not leave the most important boat trip until the last day or let cancellation remove your only plan. Ask about boat type, meeting point, transfers, fees, meals, operational insurance and cancellation policy. Travellers with motion sickness or small children may get better value from a good resort and land activities than from chasing many islands.
Thailand’s wide choice adds decisions about cities, neighbourhoods and islands. Bali may look simpler as one island, yet Ubud, Nusa Dua, Seminyak and Uluwatu make the area a separate decision. Quality comes from matching hotel, location and transport to your pace. Walking to restaurants calls for a different location from a secluded couple’s villa. A family needing stroller access or a lift cannot rely on the phrase “family resort”. Write down practical requirements before reviewing hotel lists.
Check the quote before paying
Ask your consultant to present both quotes in the same structure. A private-transfer, breakfast, baggage and excursion package cannot be compared directly with a hotel-only price. Mark each item as included, excluded, optional or awaiting confirmation.
Then score each quote out of five for experience fit, comfortable pace, seasonal fit, cost clarity and flexible terms. Price should not carry all the weight: a cheaper quote with an exhausting route or unsuitable room may cost more after amendments.
Common planning pitfalls
It may be sponsored, filmed in another season or suited to a traveller without children. Take ideas, then rebuild the nights and distances around your own party.
A price or rating cannot make up for the wrong location. Choose the area and beach first, then compare hotels within that range.
A late arrival or long flight does not suit a lengthy drive or tight domestic connection. Build the first night into the itinerary, rather than treating it as spare time.
A climate average does not predict your boat day. Plan an alternative, check near-term forecasts and follow operator and authority warnings.
Saudi residency does not automatically give a traveller Saudi-passport entry conditions. Check every nationality and document, including children’s, before non-refundable bookings.
Add baggage, transfers, taxes, excursions, fees and a contingency. Compare what you will actually pay, not the headline number.
A comparison built around your trip
Six factors matter before buying: destination structure, nights and transfers, complete budget, season by area, travel party and entry requirements. Hotels and prices change with dates and availability, so fixed destination scores would be misleading. Regulatory details belong to official sources; changing practical details are explained in the linked guides.
“Leans towards” means closer to the scenario, not best for every traveller. Unsuitable flights, an unavailable hotel or a coast that does not match the season can reverse the result. Use the comparison to narrow your options, then request dated quotes to confirm price and availability.
Decide in six steps
Questions before choosing
There is no absolute winner. Bali leans towards privacy, villas, culture and wellness; Thailand towards city, island and service variety. Decide using your dates, nights, travel party and final cost.
It depends on flights, season, area and hotel. Compare a complete total in riyals, including baggage, transfers, fees, excursions and terms, rather than one hotel night.
Thailand usually offers broader family options, but a good Bali hotel and fewer transfers can suit a particular family better. Children’s ages, hotel location and travel time decide the fit.
Bali is strong for villas and privacy; Thailand for resort and island variety with a city option. Choose the experience before choosing the destination name.
In Bali, 7–9 nights usually allow two comfortable bases. In Thailand, 8–11 nights often better suit a city and coast. These are planning guidelines, not mandatory limits.
Indonesia has a B1 visa-on-arrival route for eligible passports, including Saudi Arabia on the published list; verify current eligibility and conditions. Thailand announced exemption changes in 2026, so check official rules for your arrival date. The TDAC is not a visa.
It depends on the month, area, coast and activity, particularly because Thailand’s coasts differ. Choose a specific area with a backup plan rather than judging the whole country.
Yes, but it is often impractical on a short trip because airports and formalities take time. Below roughly two weeks, exploring one destination more deeply often offers better value, depending on actual flights.
