EGYPT / CAIRO → LUXOR
Egypt itinerary for 5 or 7 days
The short answer: use 5 days for Cairo and Giza, or 7 days for Cairo, Giza and Luxor. Aswan can fit into a week on paper, but another transfer takes time away from a first visit. These routes protect arrival and departure days rather than squeezing three demanding sights into one afternoon.
These are suggested routes, not bookings or live opening schedules. Confirm flights, tickets, opening arrangements and weather before committing to a fixed day.
One decision shapes the whole trip
How many days do you have between landing and departure?
Choose your trip length to see the suitable cities, then compare the daily schedules below.
Cairo and Giza in depth
A relaxed arrival, a pyramids day, a museum and city day, historic Cairo, then a protected departure. No domestic airport or hotel change.
- Bases
- One base in Cairo or Giza
- Leave out
- Luxor, Aswan and Alexandria
- Pace
- Low to moderate
Before you divide the days
Five rules that keep the itinerary manageable
Keep arrival for recovery
Do not attach a pyramids tour or domestic flight to a long international journey. Immigration, baggage and the drive to your hotel can change both your timing and your energy.
One demanding area at a time
Give Giza and historic Cairo separate days. Luxor's East and West Banks are not one sight. Nearby names on a map do not necessarily make an easy outing.
One main museum
Choose according to collections, location and tickets. Two major museums after the pyramids become a checklist rather than an experience, especially for children and older travellers.
Allow half a day for a domestic transfer
Include hotel checkout, the airport, baggage and the journey to the next hotel—not just flying time. An early flight does not automatically leave a full sightseeing day.
Keep one optional extra
Give each day a main activity and an optional one. If traffic or heat slows you down, drop the extra before sacrificing meals, rest or a sensible departure buffer.
Route one • 5 days / 4 nights
Cairo and Giza without a domestic airport
Day 1 is arrival and day 5 is departure. If you land at dawn or leave late at night, do not automatically fill every hour; allow for sleep and travel time.
- DAY 01
ARRIVAL / AN EASY EVENING
Arrival, your hotel and a short first outing
Transfer to your hotel and check in. If you genuinely have energy left, choose a nearby walk or early dinner in the hotel area. A Nile outing or market visit need not happen if baggage is delayed.
- Essential: transport, accommodation and rest.
- Optional: dinner or a nearby walk.
- Drop if delayed: a prepaid excursion.
- DAY 02
GIZA / AN EARLY START
The Giza plateau, with optional Saqqara
Start with the pyramids and Sphinx in the first part of the day. Allow time to walk and enjoy viewpoints rather than taking quick photographs only. After lunch, add Saqqara if your group is comfortable with a longer archaeological day, or return to the hotel for a rest.
- For families: reduce interior visits and midday walking.
- In hot weather: keep Saqqara optional.
- Avoid combining: the pyramids, Saqqara and a major museum in one day.
- DAY 03
MUSEUM / THE MODERN CITY
One main museum and a gentler side of Cairo
Choose the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir or the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization according to current arrangements and your interests. Follow it with lunch and rest, then Zamalek, the riverfront or a nearby activity rather than crossing the city twice.
- Decision: the museum determines the area for the rest of the day.
- Alternative: an indoor activity in heat or dusty weather.
- Duration: three to four hours may be enough for a non-specialist visit.
- DAY 04
HISTORIC CAIRO / A PLANNED WALK
Islamic Cairo, then a Coptic stop or market
Choose one route: the Citadel and nearby mosques, or Al-Muizz Street and its surrounding sights. Khan el-Khalili can round off the day, but it is not a reason to rush all of historic Cairo. Coptic Cairo can be an alternative or its own half-day, depending on your interests.
- With a guide: arrange entry and a connected walking route.
- Without a guide: reduce the number of sights and define your start and finish.
- For the evening: a market visit or dinner, not a third demanding tour.
- DAY 05
DEPARTURE / AN AIRPORT BUFFER
A protected departure, not a hidden sightseeing day
Check checkout, traffic and airport timing. For a late flight, choose a nearby, cancellable activity and allow time to freshen up and collect baggage. Do not head to Giza or Old Cairo before an international flight without a clear buffer.
- Before leaving: passports, baggage and confirmed transport.
- Optional: lunch or a small museum nearby.
- Unsuitable: a day trip outside Cairo.
Route two • 7 days / 6 nights
Cairo and Giza, with Luxor
This route uses a domestic flight rather than assuming an overnight train. Return to Cairo before the international departure. If flight times do not work, stay an extra day in Cairo rather than forcing Luxor into the schedule.
- DAY 01
Arrive in Cairo and rest
Follow the same rule as the five-day route: no major sightseeing after an international flight. Dinner nearby and preparing for Giza are enough.
- DAY 02
Giza: the pyramids and Sphinx
A focused day on the Giza plateau. Add Saqqara only if you start early, your group feels comfortable and the weather allows.
- DAY 03
A main museum and its surrounding area
Choose one museum according to current arrangements, then lunch and flexible time. Pack for Luxor in the evening rather than taking a late-night tour before a morning flight.
- DAY 04
Fly to Luxor and visit the East Bank
Take a practical morning flight, transfer to the hotel and rest, then visit East Bank temples according to arrival time, tickets and heat. Do not assume the earliest flight gives you a full day.
- DAY 05
An early-paced West Bank day
Start the Valley of the Kings early, then choose a main temple and one extra stop or sight. Lunch and rest belong in the plan; leaving out a fourth sight protects the experience at the first three.
- DAY 06
Return to Cairo, with flexible historic sightseeing
Depending on your flight, make historic Cairo a flexible half-day, or replace it with rest and a nearby walk. Returning in good time matters more than collecting every missed sight.
- DAY 07
International departure
Avoid a tight chain of Luxor–Cairo and international flights. Spending the previous night in Cairo provides a buffer against a domestic schedule change or delay.
Your museum choice shapes half the day
Choose one, then plan the area around it
Grand Egyptian Museum
A logical choice when staying in Giza or exploring ancient Egypt in depth, but do not automatically combine it with a full pyramids day. Check tickets and available areas for your travel dates.
Pair it with:Lunch or an early return to your hotel, not a long crossing to Old Cairo.
Egyptian Museum in Tahrir
A central option for downtown Cairo or Zamalek. Its character differs from the Grand Egyptian Museum; choose according to collections and interests, not simply which is newer or older.
Pair it with:Downtown, the Nile or Zamalek according to your energy.
National Museum of Egyptian Civilization
A wider account of Egyptian civilization, in a location that can work with Coptic Cairo or Fustat. Do not treat it as a backup after another large museum on the same day.
Pair it with:Coptic Cairo or lunch nearby, with planned transport.
The same route, a different day
Plan for heat and energy
A milder day
Start with the largest sight, add a second after lunch, then keep the evening easy. Milder weather does not remove the need for water or sun protection, or justify an unlimited list of stops.
A hot day
Visit an exposed site at the earliest practical time, use a museum or rest for midday, and choose a short activity near sunset. Air-conditioned transport and waiting time matter too.
A family day
Two main stops are a comfortable limit, with a known meal time, toilets, shade and clear transport arrangements. Children do not judge a trip by the number of ancient sites they enter.
An arrival day
Hotel, food and sleep, with an optional nearby activity. Avoid prepaying for a tour starting two hours after an international landing.

Thoughtful changes, not random omissions
A gentler version for families and older travellers
Children under 8
- One main museum, with a visit you can end early.
- Keep Saqqara or another interior visit optional.
- Plan water, food, hats and rest before exhaustion.
- Confirm a suitable car seat and seat belts.
Older travellers or limited mobility
- Ask about actual walking distances and uneven ground.
- Reduce steps, climbing and vehicle changes.
- Choose suitable entrances, parking and resting places.
- A sight near your hotel is not automatically easy to visit.
A multi-generation family
- One shared main activity, then two shorter options.
- Confirm rooms, connections and transport in writing.
- Leave an evening unbooked after a Luxor day.
- Decide who stays with a child if a sight is unsuitable.
Transport is the hidden hinge
Count door-to-door time, not just flying time
Cairo and Giza
Group the days geographically. Crossing the city repeatedly uses time and adds fatigue. Give Giza a day, downtown and a museum a day, and historic Cairo a day.
- Confirm the meeting point and driver.
- Allow for traffic at your travel time.
- Do not let a distant restaurant break up a coherent route.
Cairo to Luxor
Compare domestic flight times with hotel checkout, the airport, baggage and transfers. A very early flight may require a packed breakfast; a late arrival may rule out an East Bank visit.
- Pack for the domestic flight's baggage conditions.
- Give the Luxor hotel your arrival time.
- Return to Cairo the night before the international flight.
Moving around Luxor
The two banks are not one sight. Arrange crossings, transport and lunch, and start the West Bank early. Do not add a balloon flight, Nile outing or night temple visit without understanding its timing and weather policy.
- Specify which tickets are included.
- Ask about waiting time and parking.
- Keep one optional sight to drop first.
Common mistakes
Trying to save time can waste it
Luxor in five days
It adds an airport and hotel while taking time away from Cairo. If the south is your priority, extend the trip or remove a clearly defined part rather than compressing everything.
Three major museums
Different collections do not mean you must see them all on a short visit. Choose one main museum, and another only with a clear purpose and separate time.
Aswan in a crowded week
Distance is more than an extra name. Aswan deserves time, the Nile and a different pace—not a stop between two airports.
A full departure day
A distant activity or non-refundable ticket before an international flight creates unnecessary risk. Keep the last activity nearby and easy to drop.
Egypt itinerary questions
Answers before you fix the days
Are 5 days enough for Egypt?
They are enough for a focused first visit to Cairo and Giza if arrival and departure count within the five days. We do not suggest adding Luxor or Aswan in this window: transfers use time you could spend sightseeing and resting. Give Giza its own day, choose one main museum and keep the last activity optional if traffic or heat slows you down.
What is a balanced 7-day Egypt itinerary?
For a first visit, Cairo and Giza with Luxor often make a balanced route: around three days in Cairo and Giza, a domestic flight, two days in Luxor, then a protected return before international departure. Actual flight schedules can change the order. Count the journey from one hotel door to the next, not flying time alone.
Should I add Luxor to a 5-day itinerary?
Not as the default choice. It is technically possible, but adds airports and a second hotel to a short trip. Explore Cairo and Giza in depth, or allow at least 7 days before adding Luxor.
Can I see Cairo, Luxor and Aswan in 7 days?
You can put them on a schedule, but this will not suit most first visits. Another transfer leaves less room for delays and heat. Choose Cairo and Luxor, or extend to 9 or 10 days to include Aswan without rushing.
Should I choose the Grand Egyptian Museum or the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir?
Choose one main museum per day according to your interests, tickets, hotel location and current operating arrangements. Do not automatically put two major museums after the pyramids. Check the official website and entry hours before fixing the day.
Is this Egypt itinerary suitable for children?
Yes, if you reduce the number of sights, start early, plan a midday rest and choose one museum. Check stroller suitability, shade, toilets and transfers according to the child's age and each site.
Where should I stay for this itinerary?
Giza reduces the drive on the pyramids day; central Cairo or Zamalek may work well for museums and the city. Luxor sights are on two banks. Compare travel times, the airport, rooms, breakfast and parking rather than choosing by district name alone.
Do I need a private guide?
It is not compulsory, but a guide can add value to the pyramids or Luxor by organising the route, explanation and transport. Ask for the guide's name, language, sights, inclusions, start time and change policy in writing.
How should I adjust the itinerary in summer?
Visit exposed sights at the earliest practical time, use a museum or rest for midday and reduce the third stop. In Luxor, organising mornings and afternoons matters more than adding another temple.
Does the itinerary guarantee opening hours or tickets?
No. This is a suggested route, not a booking or live operating schedule. Opening hours, tickets, flights and restrictions can change; confirm with official sources and the supplier before paying.
