How many days do you need in Georgia?
Seven days work well for a focused eastern Georgia trip: keep Tbilisi as the base, visit nearby Mtskheta, spend a night in the mountains and reserve a full day for Kakheti. It is not enough time to collect every famous city without turning the holiday into repeated hotel changes and long drives.
We leave Batumi out of this version. The official Georgia Travel site lists a road journey of about 5½ hours between Tbilisi and Batumi before stops or traffic. If the coast is a priority, build a western route instead of squeezing east and west into one week.
Arrival day is for settling in, and departure day is not a safe place for a long mountain drive. Airport formalities, baggage and hotel check-in all take time.

Old Town in one walkable area
Link Freedom Square, Old Tbilisi, the Bridge of Peace and Rike Park. Add Narikala or the sulphur-bath district only if weather, opening hours and the group’s energy allow. For rain, choose a central museum and a longer lunch.
Plan for cobbled streets and slopes: wear suitable shoes and leave time to rest. A rainy-day option is the National Museum or Tbilisi History Museum with a long lunch nearby. - 03Heritage
Mtskheta and a relaxed Tbilisi afternoon
Visit Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, then return for rest. The official tourism portal gives roughly 20 minutes for the direct drive from Tbilisi, before traffic or stops. Keep the visit unhurried and respect worship and local dress customs.
Later, choose Rustaveli or Mtatsminda if weather and opening times suit. Do not add Gori and Borjomi to this short outing. - 04Military Highway
Tbilisi → Ananuri → Gudauri → Stepantsminda
Leave after breakfast in a suitable vehicle. If conditions allow, stop at Jinvali Reservoir and Ananuri, then choose one stop in Gudauri. The official reference for the direct Tbilisi–Stepantsminda road is about 2 hours 55 minutes; stops, trucks, fog or restrictions can extend the day. Check in and keep the evening light.

Gergeti and the return to Tbilisi
Choose the church transfer according to visibility, road access and the group; do not assume the uphill walk suits everyone. If visibility is poor, use the Stepantsminda museum or a slower town visit instead of chasing a photograph. Return to Tbilisi before evening and leave time for a meal and rest.
If the road is restricted, do not pressure the driver. Activate the written change plan with the hotel and activity provider. - 06Kakheti
Sighnaghi and the Alazani Valley
Give the east a full day: explore Sighnaghi’s streets and walls, then choose Bodbe or one nearby food stop. The official tourism portal lists about 1 hour 40 minutes from Tbilisi to Sighnaghi before stops. For families, ask about ingredients and sensitivities, and make non-alcoholic options part of the plan.
Keep it simple: Sighnaghi plus one nearby stop. Do not combine Telavi, Kvareli and Sighnaghi in one day. - 07Departure
Keep the airport day flexible
Check the flight, hotel check-out, road time, baggage, insurance and travel documents. If the flight is later, keep breakfast or shopping near the hotel and agree a written return time. Do not schedule a day trip, mountain drive or fixed ticket.
Day rule: a suitable airport buffer matters more than adding one last attraction.

Leave Kakheti out and allow a wider weather window in the mountains. Keep the return to Tbilisi between the mountain stay and the flight.
One Tbilisi base
Keep all six nights in Tbilisi and visit Mtskheta and Kakheti as day trips. Skip Kazbegi if the long road does not suit the group.
Keep a flexible mountain option
Check official restrictions and activity operation before confirming. Keep the stay changeable and a city alternative ready.
Borjomi instead of Kakheti
Choose a separate overnight or outing. Do not combine it with Mtskheta and Kazbegi in one day; choose a western route if the coast is the priority.

Convenient for walking to sights and restaurants, but check slopes, stairs, noise and vehicle access. A panoramic listing may mean a long climb; ask about lifts and the entrance before booking for a family.
Rustaveli or Vera
Practical for restaurants, connections and day-trip pickups. Check the actual distance to the metro or driver meeting point rather than relying on the phrase “city centre.”
Stepantsminda
Choose a view if it matters, but prioritise heating, insulation, vehicle access and cancellation terms. Confirm in writing whether breakfast, parking and a transfer to Gergeti are included or separate.

Allow for stops, fog and road controls
The published direct drive from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda is about 2 hours 55 minutes. The visitor route also stops at Ananuri and Gudauri, while snow, fog, traffic or official restrictions can extend the day. Do not schedule a fixed activity on arrival or connect the return mountain drive to an international flight.
Within Tbilisi, choose walking, metro or a car to suit the neighbourhood. For trips outside the city, confirm the vehicle, passenger and luggage capacity, child seats, driver hours and any waiting charges in writing.

Kakheti

Families and older travellers
Keep the Tbilisi base, shorten the mountain day or add a second Stepantsminda night. Confirm stairs, walking distance, child seats and rest stops for the actual group. Ask the hotel to confirm the exact room type, bed count and occupancy in writing; “family room” is not a standard specification.
Couples who want scenery
Protect the mountain overnight and choose one slower Tbilisi day. If nature is the priority, consider two mountain nights instead of Kakheti. Keep two evenings free of organised tours and make Sighnaghi a gentle day with one nearby stop.
Winter visitors
Prioritise road access, daylight and a cancellable mountain stay. Keep a city alternative ready rather than treating the summer sequence as fixed.

Start with the international flight dates, then check the mountain night and driver together. Do not pay for a non-refundable hotel before you understand the road and weather change policy.

Before you confirm a Georgia itinerary
Is seven days enough for a first trip to Georgia?
Yes, for a focused first visit built around Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kakheti and one night in Stepantsminda. It is not comfortable to combine Tbilisi, Kazbegi, Batumi and Borjomi in one week without making the trip a sequence of transfers.
How should I divide seven days in Georgia?
A balanced plan is five nights in Tbilisi and one in Stepantsminda: an arrival day, two city and Mtskheta days, two mountain-route days, one Kakheti day and the departure day. Adjust the order for flight times, weather and road conditions.
Should I add Batumi to a seven-day Georgia itinerary?
We do not recommend adding it to an eastern route on a first visit; the drive from Tbilisi is long and takes substantial time. If the coast is the priority, plan a separate western route or allow at least nine days.
Should I visit Kazbegi as a day trip or stay overnight?
An overnight is more comfortable because it spreads the drive and leaves room for weather, especially for families and couples. A day trip is possible but long, and stops can leave little time in Stepantsminda.
How long is the drive from Tbilisi to Kazbegi?
The official tourism portal lists about 2 hours 55 minutes to Stepantsminda before stops, traffic or weather restrictions. In practice, allow half a day if you plan to stop at Ananuri and Gudauri.
Do I need a car for this itinerary?
Not for Tbilisi itself. For the mountain route and Kakheti, a private driver or organised tour is practical for many families. Self-driving requires experience and checks of insurance, weather and road conditions before departure.
Where should I stay in Tbilisi on a first visit?
Old Town is convenient for walking to sights but has steeper streets. Rustaveli and Vera offer more restaurant and transport connections. Choose for your group’s walking needs and itinerary, not room price alone.
What can replace Kazbegi if the road closes or the weather turns?
Keep the mountain hotel changeable, use a day in Mtskheta or Tbilisi, or choose Borjomi as part of a fully reordered route. Do not attempt a mountain road during an official closure or unsafe weather.
Is this itinerary suitable for children and older travellers?
It can be, with less uphill walking, a suitable vehicle and child seats where needed, and one main activity a day. Check stairs, lifts and hotel location; not every mountain stop suits limited mobility.
