ROADBOOK / YOUR FIRST SELF-DRIVE TRIP

Iceland itinerary for 8 or 10 days

At a glance: with 8 days, focus on Reykjavík, the Golden Circle and the South Coast to Jökulsárlón, with a staged return and a flexible day. With 10 days, add West Iceland and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula rather than squeezing in the whole Ring Road.

This is a first-visit route, not a race between pins. Driving load is a planning estimate before stops and weather, not an arrival-time promise. Check roads and warnings morning and evening, and drop the last stop if the day becomes too demanding.

THE DISTANCE DECISION

Eight days makes a coherent southern route; ten gives the west more breathing room

8D / 7NThe recommended core route
  • An arrival night in Reykjavík.
  • The Golden Circle, with an overnight outside the capital.
  • Vík and Skaftafell/Öræfi.
  • Jökulsárlón within the South Coast block.
  • A return in stages and a flexible day.

Deliberately left out: the north, east, Westfjords and a same-day drive from Reykjavík to the lagoon and back.

10D / 9NDeeper, not faster
  • The same southern block without rushing.
  • Two nights in West Iceland.
  • A Snæfellsnes loop from one base.
  • A final night near Reykjavík or Keflavík.
  • A day that can move when the weather changes.

Still not added: the entire Ring Road or a different hotel every night. The extra days are for time in a place and a useful buffer.

Choose your trip length and driving season

Select 8 or 10 days to see the daily route. The seasonal summary highlights how winter changes the plan; the winter section below explains the adjustments in detail.

Trip length
Driving conditions
8 days in summer: the south to the glacier lagoon, with a staged return and a flexible day.
ROUTE MANIFEST / 8 DAYS

8 days in Iceland: the south without a punishing return drive

Overnight sequence: Reykjavík, Selfoss/Hella, two nights in Vík, Öræfi/Klaustur, Vík, then Reykjavík. The day-by-day alternatives below depend on road conditions and availability.

  1. 01KEF → RVKLight load

Arrival: just the car and hotel

Collect the car in suitable daylight if possible. Check tyres, the agreement and existing damage, then head to Reykjavík. Keep activities to a nearby walk or local pool; do not build a Reykjanes circuit around a late arrival.

Stay: Reykjavík • Fixed commitments: arrival transport and hotel
  2. 02GOLDENMedium load

    Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss

Start at Þingvellir and leave time for walks and parking, then continue to the geothermal area and Gullfoss. Do not also add a swim, a distant restaurant and a fourth route. The park publishes its daily parking arrangements; check payment and the right car park before arriving.

Stay: Selfoss or Hella • Alternative: drop one stop
  3. 03SOUTHMedium load

    Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Vík

Make the two waterfalls the backbone of the day, then add one beach or coastal viewpoint near Vík if wind and waves allow. Never approach the water at a black-sand beach for a photograph; follow signs and site boundaries.

Stay: Vík • Clothing: a waterproof layer
  4. 04VÍK BASELight load

A local day or an organised glacier activity

Keep a second night in Vík. Choose one activity with a qualified operator or a local excursion, or use short walks and rest if yesterday was demanding. Do not walk on a glacier without a guide and suitable equipment.

Stay: Vík • The value: no hotel change
  5. 05SKAFTMedium load

    Vík to Skaftafell and Öræfi

Travel east with selected stops, then choose a Skaftafell trail for your time and ability. The park describes the S1 glacier trail as 4.1 km, around 1–1.5 hours and easy, but current conditions and local instructions always take priority.

Stay: Öræfi or Klaustur • Arrange food early
  6. 06JÖK → VÍKHeavy load

    Jökulsárlón, then back to Vík

Start early for the lagoon and ice-strewn beach. Choose a boat trip only if its operation and timing fit the return. Make fewer stops than on the outward journey. If visibility or roads deteriorate, stay at the same base and adjust later nights instead of chasing the next booking.

Stay: Vík • Alternative: a reserve day in Öræfi
  7. 07BUFFERFlexible load

Vík to Reykjavík: a recovery day

Use the day for a stop the weather removed, or return directly to the capital with a meal and a relaxed walk. Avoid a distant non-cancellable activity. This night protects departure and leaves time to reorganise luggage and fuel.

Stay: Reykjavík • Priority: protect day 8
  8. 08RVK → KEFLight load

    Departure without a gamble

Allow time for fuel, returning the car, checking the mileage and moving through the airport. Add a short activity only if the flight is late and roads are open. Do not make a spa visit or an entire peninsula a condition of catching the flight.

Stay: — • Fixed commitment: international flight
ROUTE MANIFEST / 10 DAYS

10 days in Iceland: the south and Snæfellsnes

Suggested sequence: Reykjavík, Selfoss/Hella, two nights in Vík, Öræfi/Klaustur, a flexible return night in Vík or Selfoss/Hella, two nights around Borgarnes/Snæfellsnes, then Reykjavík or Keflavík.

  1. 01KEF → RVKLight load

    Arrive and settle into Reykjavík

Collect the car or transfer, check in and make sure maps and booking details work offline. Do not use a paid activity to force an arrival day to succeed.

    Stay: Reykjavík
  2. 02GOLDENMedium load

    The Golden Circle to Selfoss/Hella

Visit Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss with one meal stop and a clear walking plan. Staying outside the capital puts you closer to the coast rather than returning in the opposite direction.

    Stay: Selfoss or Hella
  3. 03WATERFALLSMedium load

Southern waterfalls and arrival in Vík

Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are the main stops; a third is optional according to daylight and energy. Take wet clothing to a hotel with practical drying facilities.

    Stay: Vík
  4. 04VÍKLight load

A Vík base day: coast or one activity

A deliberately slower day. Check wind and waves, then choose an organised glacier tour or local stops. Swap this with day 3 if the weather is better.

    Stay: Vík • No check-out
  5. 05SKAFTMedium load

Skaftafell and an overnight near Öræfi

Break the journey with one stop before the park, then choose a walk that fits the available daylight. Check trail closures and local parking on the park website before setting out.

    Stay: Öræfi or Klaustur
  6. 06JÖK → WESTHeavy load

The glacier lagoon and a measured return west

Start at the lagoon, then return without adding every missed attraction. Aim to end near Vík or Selfoss according to weather and ability. This day calls for a live decision, not a distant dinner reservation.

Stay: Vík or Selfoss/Hella • Keep the overnight plan flexible
  7. 07WESTBOUNDMedium load

    Continue to Borgarnes or Snæfellsnes

Use the morning for a southern stop only if it does not overload the day. Pass through the capital for services, then continue to your western base. Do not begin a peninsula loop in the second half of the day.

    Stay: Borgarnes or southern/eastern Snæfellsnes
  8. 08SNÆMedium load

A Snæfellsnes loop from one base

Choose the southern coast, Arnarstapi/Hellnar and a park stop, then return to the same hotel. Follow designated roads: sensitive areas or uphill routes may close temporarily, and some mountain roads are not open year-round.

Stay: the same base • The value: no packing
  9. 09BUFFER → RVKLight load

Back to Reykjavík with a flexible day

If day 8 went well, enjoy the capital, relaxed shopping or a nearby booked activity. If the weather changed, use this for the safe half of the peninsula instead of abandoning the whole route.

    Stay: Reykjavík or Keflavík
  10. 10KEFLight load

    Departure

Fuel, car return, luggage checks and the airport. Any extra activity must be easy to drop and must not leave you dependent on a single road or a fixed appointment before the flight.

    Stay: —

THE DRIVING LOAD

Start with driving time, then allow for the real day

LIGHT

Light

Up to roughly two hours of driving in the plan. Suitable for arrival, departure or a day with a longer walk. It does not guarantee road conditions.

MEDIUM

Medium

Roughly two to three hours before stops. Keep to two main attractions and agree your turnaround time before you leave.

HEAVY

Heavy

More driving than that, or a long route with several stops. Do not follow it with a non-cancellable activity; retain a nearer overnight option.

The morning check

  • Weather warnings from the Icelandic Met Office.
  • Road conditions and cameras on Umferdin.
  • SafeTravel alerts and local closures.
  • Fuel, vehicle range and clothing.

The midday decision

  • Are visibility and wind improving or worsening?
  • Have we reached the agreed turnaround point?
  • Is the last stop worth losing the daylight buffer?
  • Is the next hotel flexible if we stop here?

OVERNIGHT BASES

Choose a hotel for the role that night plays in the route

RVK

Reykjavík

A practical arrival and final night. Check parking if collecting a car, or delay collection until you leave the city to reduce parking time.

SELFOSS / HELLA

The Golden Circle

A transitional base that reduces the return to the capital and puts you on the coast earlier. Choose nearby food and check-in hours that suit the Golden Circle day.

VÍK

The South Coast

Two nights avoid squeezing the beach, an activity and the drive into one day. Check drying facilities, parking and early breakfast.

ÖRÆFI / KLAUSTUR

Skaftafell and the lagoon

Make Jökulsárlón part of a journey rather than a day-long dash from the capital. Services are more limited, so plan accommodation and meals carefully.

BORG / SNÆ

West Iceland

For the 10-day plan only. Use one base for the Snæfellsnes loop, positioned to allow a retreat if coastal conditions or fog change.

THE WINTER VERSION

Shorten the reach, not your sleep

What changes?

  • Do not make Jökulsárlón a fixed target when conditions do not support the extension.
  • Keep consecutive nights in Vík or Selfoss rather than changing hotels daily.
  • Replace distant Snæfellsnes with a flexible day near Reykjavík when needed.
  • Choose an organised tour if winter driving does not suit your experience.
  • Treat a weather warning or road closure as a decision, not a suggestion.

For the month, daylight and northern lights, see the best time to visit Iceland.

BOOKING ORDER

Fix the framework before the activities

  1. 01

    Flights and arrival times

The plan starts at car-collection time, not the date on the ticket. If arriving at night, stay near the airport or Reykjavík rather than planning a long dark drive.

  2. 02

    Vehicle and insurance

Match the car to season, luggage, children and road terms. Understand exclusions for glass, gravel, wind and recovery. Four-wheel drive is not permission to enter a closed road.

  3. 03

    Flexible overnight bases

Secure Vík, Öræfi and western bases first because choice is more limited than in the capital. Check last arrival time, food, cancellation terms and fuel locations.

  4. 04

    One limited-capacity activity

Book a glacier outing, boat or spa after the route, with an understood cancellation window and weather policy. Do not chain two inflexible activities onto a driving day.

  5. 05

    Parking and flexible visits

Check parking systems and area charges with official sources. Leave waterfalls and flexible walks to the conditions on the day.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Answers before you commit to the route

Is 8 days enough for Iceland?

It is enough for a focused first trip covering Reykjavík, the Golden Circle and the South Coast as far as Jökulsárlón, provided you do not add the whole Ring Road. This plan protects a flexible day and splits the return from the south rather than requiring one continuous long drive.

How should I divide 10 days in Iceland?

Use five days for the south and Golden Circle, return in stages, then add two days in West Iceland and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, with a final Reykjavík or reserve day. This is a calmer first visit than trying to circle the whole island.

Should I drive the Ring Road in 10 days?

It can be technically possible in good summer conditions for an experienced driver, but leaves little margin for weather and stops and may mean changing hotels daily. For families and a first visit, we favour the south and west; allow 12 to 14 days or more for the Ring Road.

Where should I stay on an Iceland itinerary?

Match your bases to the route: Reykjavík for arrival and the finish, Selfoss or Hella for the Golden Circle, Vík for the coast, and Kirkjubæjarklaustur or Öræfi for Skaftafell and the lagoon. With 10 days, add Borgarnes or Stykkishólmur for the west.

Does this itinerary work in winter?

Not in the same sequence. In winter, shorten the eastern extension, spend more nights at each base and avoid a heavy driving day. Check weather and road warnings morning and evening, and replace self-driving with organised tours when conditions do not suit your experience or vehicle.

Do I need a four-wheel-drive vehicle?

That depends on the season, route and rental company terms. Main paved roads do not guarantee stable conditions, and F-roads have different restrictions. Choose the vehicle and cover for your dates and route; never enter a closed road or one prohibited by your rental agreement.

How many driving hours are sensible each day?

We classify planning load rather than promise a fixed journey time: light is roughly up to two hours of driving, medium around two to three, and heavy more than that, before stops. Wind, snow, daylight, parking and family needs can substantially extend the day; check the live route.

Can I visit the glacier lagoon from Reykjavík in one day?

We do not recommend that for a family or self-drive itinerary: the distance makes a very long day and removes the weather margin. Stay around Vík and then Skaftafell or Öræfi, and include Jökulsárlón within the South Coast block.

What should I do if the weather changes?

Drop the final stop rather than increase your speed. Use the flexible day, swap a long walk for a visitor centre or local pool, and stay at the same base if road advice or warnings call for it. Flexible bookings are part of the route, not an optional extra.

Is the itinerary suitable for children?

Yes, after limiting each day to one or two main stops, separating heavy driving days and choosing walks that suit their ability. The official Skaftafell glacier trail is relatively easy, but weather and surfaces change and local instructions take priority.

When should I book hotels, the car and activities?

Fix flights, the vehicle and overnight bases first, followed by limited-capacity activities. Leave waterfalls and flexible walks until weather and road conditions are clearer. A non-refundable activity should never force an unsafe drive.

Does this page include the trip cost?

This guide covers the day-by-day route and overnight plan. Use the Iceland cost calculator for flights, accommodation, the car, food and activities, the season guide to choose a month, and the package page for current availability and quotations.
