UK itinerary for 7 and 10 days

In 7 days, combine London and Manchester only: 4 nights + 2 nights. In 10 days, add Edinburgh: 4 + 2 + 3 nights. A third city on a short trip looks like a gain on the map, but takes a real day out of the experience.

The route decision

Start with your days, not the number of cities on your wish list

A workable itinerary includes arrival, hotel check-in, luggage, station transfers and a reasonable delay allowance. Here, 7 days means 6 nights and 10 days means 9 nights. Day one is a light arrival day and the final day is departure: neither counts as a full sightseeing day.

7 DAYS / 6 NIGHTS

London + Manchester

4 nights in London, 2 in Manchester. Suitable for a first visit, a family seeking a manageable pace, or a Manchester match. Consider a multi-city flight into London and out of Manchester if the fare difference is less than the cost and time of returning south.

10 DAYS / 9 NIGHTS

London + Manchester + Edinburgh

4 nights in London, 2 in Manchester, 3 in Edinburgh. Add Scotland without squeezing it into a day trip. Arriving in London and leaving Edinburgh reduces backtracking, but compare actual flights before fixing the trains.

If London alone is the priority, or your match is in the capital, keep those two nights in London rather than heading north. Use this itinerary to plan your days and route; see the UK destination guide for the broader destination and the UK trip-cost guide for your budget.

Your route board

Choose your duration and priorities before reading the days

The tool does not save personal data or book trains or matches. It rearranges priorities and highlights where your route needs a buffer.

Trip duration
Priority

Route one · 7 days

Four London days, then Manchester without backtracking

This route assumes arrival in London before evening and departure from Manchester on day seven. If flying home from London is substantially cheaper, return on the evening of day six only after checking the last train and an airport hotel. Do not make departure morning depend on an intercity train.

  1. 01LONDON · ARRIVAL

Arrival: recover from the journey before chasing sights

Transfer to your hotel, eat nearby, then walk around the neighbourhood or South Bank if you have energy. Avoid timed-entry tickets in the first 4 hours after arrival: immigration, luggage and airport traffic are outside your control.

Late-arrival alternative: Dinner and sleep only; move the walk to day two.

  2. 02WESTMINSTER LOOP

Westminster, St James’s and the Thames

Start in Westminster with Parliament and Big Ben, then St James’s Park and the outside of Buckingham Palace. After lunch continue to Trafalgar Square or Covent Garden. This is one geographical loop: do not add the Tower of London the same day simply because it is a famous landmark.

For families: Keep an hour for the park and a seated meal; drop a sight before dropping the break.

  3. 03TOWER / CITY

Tower of London and the eastern City

Book the Tower of London in the morning if it is a priority, then continue to Tower Bridge and a Thames-side walk. Choose one indoor afternoon activity or a market, not both. Group timed bookings into one half-day so the other half stays flexible.

Rain alternative: The British Museum or an indoor gallery, after checking official opening and booking arrangements.

  4. 04FAMILY / CULTURE / MATCH

A flexible day shaped around your travellers

For families, consider the Natural History Museum in South Kensington: general admission is free, with free timed tickets recommended to reduce busy-period queues. For culture, choose the British Museum and Bloomsbury. Football fans without a match can choose an officially booked stadium tour or club shop with a nearby activity.

The day’s rule: Do not combine two large museums; choose one and leave room for a park or shopping.

  5. 05TRAIN · LON → MAN

Train to Manchester, then an easy half-day

The source plan uses Avanti’s approximate 2 hours 10 minutes from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly, but allows 4 hours from leaving the London hotel to entering the Manchester room. Choose a train after the morning peak, save your ticket offline and keep the evening for the centre or Northern Quarter. Check your actual service before booking.

Operating buffer: Check Network Rail and the operator before travel, especially at weekends.

  6. 06MANCHESTER

A full city day or a full match day

Without a match, explore central Manchester, a library or gallery open that day, then a prebooked official stadium tour. With a match, avoid a paid afternoon activity: leave early, check bag rules and allow for stadium exit queues and local transport.

Safer ticket buying: Premier League guidance points to the club or an authorised partner named by the club, not an unauthorised resale marketplace.

  7. 07DEPARTURE · MAN

Departure: avoid adding a new transfer

Leave from Manchester if flights allow. Follow your airline’s international-flight airport timing and avoid a morning stadium tour that squeezes the airport buffer. If London departure is necessary, return on the night of day six, not the morning of day seven.

Route two · 10 days

Give Edinburgh three nights, not a passing photo stop

Days 1–6 follow the same London and Manchester plan. Travel to Edinburgh on day seven, use days eight and nine fully, then depart on day ten. If Edinburgh flights do not work, compare returning to London on day nine with an airport-area night. Do not hide the return transfer inside departure day.

07 / TRANSFER

Manchester → Edinburgh

Allow half a day for the train. Services and journey times vary with routing and changes: the source plan allows 3.5–4.5 hours station to station, plus the hotel transfer. Do not book castle entry for the arrival hour.

A gentle arrival activity

An easy walk in New Town or Princes Street Gardens, depending on weather and arrival time.

08 / OLD TOWN

Royal Mile and the Old Town

Start at either end of the Royal Mile and travel in one direction to reduce repeated climbs. Choose Edinburgh Castle or the Palace of Holyroodhouse as the main booking, then add St Giles, closes and outdoor views.

Why one main attraction?

Cobbles, gradients and crowds make short distances slower than they look on a map.

09 / FAMILY + VIEW

Scotland’s museum and a nature alternative

The National Museum of Scotland suits families and its permanent collection is free, as described by the official city guide. Afterwards choose the shorter Calton Hill walk, or Arthur’s Seat only with suitable weather, footwear and daylight.

Rain alternative

The National Gallery, more museum time and a café: do not move a risky outdoor activity into wet weather.

10 / DEPARTURE

Depart Edinburgh

Go directly from the hotel to the airport. A London return flight is a route decision to make from the start, not a late adjustment: a domestic flight or train and another hotel night may erase the fare saving.

The final comparison

Compare the door-to-door cost: flights + return train + hotel + time.

Booking order

Fix the structure before buying activities

This sequence avoids owning a match ticket in a city that does not match your hotel, or a cheap train you cannot reasonably reach after an international flight.

The source plan’s Avanti average, not a guarantee for every service. Timetables are commonly released around 12 weeks ahead and may be delayed by engineering work. Check your dates.

≈ 4H10

London to Edinburgh

LNER’s timetable announcement from December 2025 described some journeys of about 4 hours 10 minutes. That supports rail on the 10-day route, but check the service for your date.

+ 60–90M

Door-to-seat buffer

Hotel, Underground, station entry, finding the platform, luggage and boarding: train time alone is not your transfer time.

Hotels and everyday transport

Choose a useful connection, not just a famous neighbourhood

LONDON

Near a line that serves your plans

A departure from Euston does not require sleeping beside it all week: test the transfer for the morning of day five. South Kensington suits museums and Bloomsbury or King’s Cross can ease northbound travel, but room budget and capacity still decide.

MANCHESTER

Piccadilly or the centre

With only two nights, an extra 20 minutes on every trip matters. Check match-day stadium access and the evening return. Manchester in a hotel name does not necessarily mean the city centre.

EDINBURGH

Old Town or New Town

Staying near Waverley reduces the rail transfer, but slopes and stairs can change a hotel’s convenience. With a pushchair or mobility needs, check a step-free route and the actual hotel entrance.

The two-areas-a-day rule

In London, group Westminster with St James’s, Tower with the City, or South Kensington with Hyde Park. Avoid crossing east to west three times. In Manchester and Edinburgh, start with the furthest booking and work back towards the hotel.

Adapt the pace without rebuilding the route

Family and football change the day’s rhythm, not the whole city sequence

For families

  • Start a little later after arrival day; do not make every morning an inflexible booking.
  • Choose one major museum, with a park or open play area for the other half-day.
  • Check room capacity and children’s ages before price: family room is not a standard definition.
  • Keep a seated meal and a bathroom or rest break, especially before a theatre visit or train.
  • Check each venue’s accessibility information; the Natural History Museum describes step-free access, wheelchairs and quiet spaces.

Before non-refundable bookings

Entry requirements and weather shape your operating plan

Saudi passport holders normally need an ETA unless a visa or another qualifying status exempts them. It is linked to the passport and normally lasts two years or until that passport expires. The source plan dated 28 August 2026 budgeted £16, but fees change: check the current charge and each traveller’s eligibility directly on GOV.UK before paying. Allow the official decision window rather than assuming instant approval.

Weather is not solved by adding a random indoor attraction in another city. Keep an alternative in the same neighbourhood for each day, and read the best time to visit the UK guide (Arabic) to understand season, daylight and crowds before choosing dates.

Frequently asked questions

UK itinerary questions

How should I divide seven days in the UK?

For a first trip, divide 7 days and 6 nights into 4 London nights and 2 Manchester nights. Arrive in London and leave Manchester if flights suit. This limits backtracking; remember arrival and departure reduce usable sightseeing time.

What is a practical ten-day UK itinerary?

Use 10 days and 9 nights: 4 nights in London, 2 in Manchester and 3 in Edinburgh. Travel between cities by train and leave Edinburgh if multi-city flights work. Each city then has at least one full day without a transfer.

Can London, Manchester and Edinburgh fit in seven days?

It is technically possible, but extra hotel changes and transfers consume a short trip. Keep London and Manchester for 7 days and add Edinburgh with 10 days or more.

How long is the London to Manchester train?

The source plan uses an Avanti average of about 2 hours 10 minutes between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly. Add a 60–90 minute hotel-to-seat buffer and check your actual timetable and engineering work before fixing activities after arrival.

Should I buy train tickets early?

Usually, when your intercity dates are fixed. The source plan uses an approximate 12-week advance-release window; actual release dates vary. Compare ticket flexibility with the saving and check engineering work, especially on weekends and public holidays.

How do I add a football match?

Fix the match city and date first and allow only a light extra activity that day. Buy from the club or an authorised partner named by the club. Premier League guidance warns that unofficial tickets can be cancelled or refused at the gate.

Does the itinerary suit families with children?

Yes, with two nearby areas a day and a rest break. London’s Natural History Museum and the National Museum of Scotland offer family-friendly permanent collections with free general entry. Follow current venue guidance on free reservations and paid exhibitions.

Where should I stay in each city?

In London, favour a useful direct transport connection over a famous neighbourhood name. Piccadilly or central Manchester suits the short stay. In Edinburgh, choose Old Town, New Town or Waverley according to walking needs. Test the hotel-to-station route before paying.

Do Saudi travellers need a UK ETA?

Saudi passport holders normally require an ETA unless a visa or another qualifying status exempts them. Check each passport on GOV.UK before travel. The authorisation is passport-linked; use the current official fee and decision window rather than relying on an older quoted amount.

What budget does this itinerary need?

Use the UK trip-cost guide to model flights, hotels, meals and transport in Saudi riyals. Replace planning allowances with actual quotations for your dates and party size; this itinerary focuses on the route rather than a fixed package price.

Method and sources

A route you can reprice and update

The source plan was reviewed on 28 August 2026 using rail operators, official entry information, ticket-buying guidance and tourism bodies. Attractions illustrate geographical groupings, not guaranteed inclusions. Opening times, booking rules and services change: confirm current details for your dates, especially after transport or attraction changes.

For a price, request a current programme identifying flights, hotels, trains, tickets, inclusions and terms.

Have your dates, party size and match city?
